Plato's Reply to Glaucon's First Objection that Justice Is No More than a Compromise - Term Paper Example Politicians interpret justice in one way and sociologists and philosophers interpret it in another way. Different religions and different cultures have different views about justice. For example, capital punishment is an accepted way of punishing criminals in some of the most advanced societies like United Sates. However, it is prohibited in many other countries. Buddhists do believe that killing of a person or an animal under any circumstances is an inhuman and injustice act whereas some other communities do believe that killing of enemies of their culture or community is an acceptable act. In short, justice is interpreted in different ways by different people. Plato has argued that justice is no more than compromise as a reply to Glauconââ¬â¢s first objection. This paper critically analyses the claims of Plato. ââ¬Å"For Glaucon, stripping him of everything but his justice simply equates to removing his reputation and all the good things which accrue to him from that. Any good he achieves is anotherââ¬â¢s good, and why should anyone care about thatâ⬠(Brown, p.54). Glaucon argued that one of the major consequences of justice is happiness. In other words, granting of justice will make a person happier at the expense of another person. For example, suppose capital punishment is provided to a criminal who brutally raped a female. This punishment may give happiness to the victim even though it provides displeasure to the offender. In other words, justice can be provided only at the expense of another person according to the views of Glaucon. In response to Glauconââ¬â¢s argument, Plato replied that justice is no more than a compromise. In other words, justice is a compromise between good and evil. It should be noted that "in any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profitâ⬠(The Nature of Compromise). In other words, the ultimate beneficiary of a co mpromise would be the evil force. If we analyse Platoââ¬â¢s argument in that sense, justice will provide more benefits to the offender than the victim. Plato's answer lies in his account of the virtuous soul. The soul is a complex entity. Reflection will show that the best state of a complex is harmony. That can only occur in the soul when each part has and does its own - when reason rules and the other parts are subdued. Thus, as the health of the body, intrinsically desirable, is physical order, so the health of the soul is psychic harmony - and that is happiness. However, order in the soul is exactly like order in the State ââ¬â and it is justice. The harmonious soul, then, is the just (virtuous) soul, where reason rules. Such an internal disposition is happiness, which is immune from the invasions of luck (Mackenzie, p.89). In Platoââ¬â¢s opinion, happiness has different dimensions. He has pointed out that happiness is highly subjective since it is associated with phys ical and mental factors. Health of a body is a physical order whereas happiness is a mental order according to Plato. For example, social recognition provides mental happiness whereas consumption of better foods will keep our body healthy. In the first case, our soul will become happy whereas in the second case, our body will become happy. It should be noted that human is believed to be the product of body and soul. Review of History on American Policy and Globalization It may be stated that the primary historical process that has affected international relation in the recent past is globalization. Globalization is not a new development; it has been progressing for most of human history Globalization is the integration of human activity across geographic space. This covers many areas of human activity including, social and cultural contact, environment, and economics. (University of Arizona, 2007), It is a process and not an event as it continues to take place across time. It is also multidirectional and not smooth as it could progress and retreat as may be seen by the fact that some areas are more affected than others. However, it affects all actors in international relations, but with different consequences. Globalization in the modern era, for purposes of simplicity is divided into several categories as follows: economic, social, cultural, military, and environmental (University of Arizona, 2007) As a result foreign policy which a realm in politics affects and is affected by all these areas. It may also be observed that all five areas are driven by technology. As communications, transportation, and production technologies improve it becomes easier to interact across geographic space. This could be illustrated or observed in the industrial revolution spread a new form of production that has made transportation and communication easier via rail and water transport. This also caused the creation of control of particular resources that are vital for military security such as in the case of coal, iron, and others (University of Arizona, 2007). Global integration has accelerated in fits and starts for the past 150 years with the World Bank having focused on economic integration and which has identified three ââ¬Å"wavesâ⬠of globalization. The first wave covers the period 1854 to 1914 and is characterized by: (a) industrial revolution and colonialism both economically and militarily thus causing the integration of the global economy that came from the integrated colonial systems under European, the US and Japanese domination and (b) economically integrated world as felt today in terms of capital transfer and movement of persons. University of Arizona, 2007) The period between 1914 to 1945 may be considered an interregnum due to a few world wars and a depression. It must be stated however that the IMF was born on December 27, 1945 to address the 1930ââ¬â¢s depression. The IMF was later found to assume more rules in globalization waves after World War II. The second wave therefore is from 1945 ââ¬â 1973, where the following are observed: (a) economic integration resumes, but under divided conditions; (b) integration of Soviet bloc in a command economy system and of US bloc under the Bretton Woods System; and (c) integration of the Western bloc causing it to become generally market-driven (University of Arizona, 2007). The third wave of globalization is the post 1973 era ,where the following events could be observed: (a) the East-West division which started strongly and only to fade in the mid 1980ââ¬â¢s and to fall apart by the 1990ââ¬â¢s; (b) material and big changes in production and communications technology and economic integration. The shift towards more global integration may be seen with more states opting to adopt the Western Institutions which may be explained as follows: The mid 1980ââ¬â¢s saw the tide turning to the US in the Cold War; and (b) more freedom was made possible as the US block has become very free. This particular wave is characterized also by the emergence of market-driven integration, hence one could see the integration of the global economy spreading further to a much larger part of the world, and thus accelerated after the Cold War ends (University of Arizona, 2007). It is from this wave that the World Trade Organization came into existence on the basis of the conduct of its negations through the so called rounds as the Uruguay Round has commenced in September 1986 and has continued until April 1994. WTOââ¬â¢s current works basically started from these negation and there were subsequent ones and have until today. 2. 2 Summary of arguments in favor of globalization Democracy presupposes free enterprise and free enterprise could only be back bone of globalization hence for US to support globalization it must support democracy not only in its country but also all over the world. Given this theoretical frame, it is not hard to appreciate the consistency of the US in supporting democracy all over the world. The US support for democracy could be appreciated from the words of Former President Bill Clinton saying: Ultimately, the best strategy to ensure our security and to build a durable peace is to support the advance of democracy elsewhere. Democracies dont attack each other. (Clinton, 1994) It is believed by many that democracy is also good for business since nations that embrace political reforms using democratic principles are more likely to pursue economic reforms that improve the productivity of businesses. This could be evidenced by the fact since the mid-1980s, an increase in levels of foreign direct investment going to emerging market democracies relative to countries that have not undertaken political reforms has been recorded (Childs, 2007). The United States has maintained by its declaration about its support for democracy and human rights through several means although its commitment to human rights is doubted and questioned by human rights organizations (Satter, 2007). As regards to those who oppose globalization, it may be asked: ââ¬Å"If globalization is not promoted or supported, what could be the possible alternative? Could countries isolate themselves? â⬠One could see what happened with North Korea. At the guise to trying to show to the whole world that it cannot be made to submit to stop its nuclear program, it recently made a declaration for its need of help such as oil from the other countries and so the US was willing to lend a hand. The WTO is one of the organizations that would help promote globalization. WTO assists developing, least-developed and low-income countries in transition to adjust to WTO rules and is a center of economic research and analysis and cooperates closely with the IMF and the World Bank under the principles of the trading system which may be considered to promote globalization. Since the WTO also establishes a framework for trade policies but not to define or specify outcomes, it must be concerned with setting the rules of the trade policy games and part of these principles include: First is nondiscrimination which includes two major components the most favored nation (MFN) rule, and the national treatment policy. Although these components are part of the main WTO rules on goods, services, and intellectual property, their precise scope and nature still manifest variability on different e areas. The MFN rule necessitates a WTO member to apply the same conditions on all trade with other WTO members. When one grants someone a special favor to someone and the said country must have to do the same for all other WTO members, too. National treatment on the other hand requires that imported and locally-produced goods must be treated equally, which must start after the foreign goods have entered the market at the minimum (Wold, 1996). Another principle is reciprocity which reflects both a desire to limit the scope of free-riding that may arise because of the MFN rule, and a desire to obtain better access to foreign markets. This must be done as requirement in terms of reciprocal concessions in order to ensure that the gain from doing so (from multilateral liberalization is better r than the gain available from unilateral liberalization; intend to ensure that such gains will materialize. The person objecting to the benefits of globalization may find it hard to contradict the existence and application of these principles and alternatives available could not be as good as asserted. Another challenging question that may be posed against the opponents of globalization is this: ââ¬Å"How the problem of the environment could be solved with out a world effort that could be best helped by globalization? â⬠It may be argued that globalization promotes not only economic interactions but also social and environmental ones. Global warming is never a national problem alone. It has become a global problem that requires global attention (Gardiner, 2004). With countries forming their alliances and organizations they also make rules to protect the environment. An isolationist has therefore no place in this globe. 3. Conclusion Globalization is a phenomenon. It was not made by America. Rather it has been a natural phenomenon that the expansion of knowledge has brought to mankind. Even early philosophers may have seen it birth long time ago and it still continuing. It could be reduced into simple proposition ââ¬Å"no man is an islandâ⬠. By the same analogy it is hard to see a country isolating itself from other countries. This could be seen in the history of mankind it self. Even those countries which were at war are now trading partners because there are more tendencies to help each other and live than killing its other. For the US therefore to go against globalization in its foreign policy would be the most inconsistent and absurd thing to happen since allied with globalization are its other interest which must also be attained.

The point of view in The Old Man and the Sea is from that of the old man, Santiago.The Old Man and the Sea is about an old fisherman named Santiago who thinks that his luck has ran out. Before he got old he was a very good fisher and could catch plenty of fish. Now however he hardly ever catches anything. Santiagoà ¡Ã ¦s young friend Manolin used to fish with him but he had to stop because his parents wanted him to fish with someone who caught something everyday. After weeks of not catching anything, Santiago goes out and catches the largest fish that he has ever seen in his life. He has a hard time getting it up and it takes away all of his strength. He has an even harder time getting it back to the village because it is night and all of the sharks are feeding off of it. He is unable to do anything about the hungry sharks. Upon finally returning to the village, he is so tired that he is not able to worry about this fish and goes directly to his shack and sleeps for an extremely long time. When he is awaken by Manolin, he finds that the fish that he caught was destroyed by the sharks and that all of his efforts were for not. However Manolin encourages Santiago to continue fishing because he still has much to learn about the sea.Santiago is the main character in Hemingwayà ¡Ã ¦s The Old Man and the Sea. He is an old fisherman who seems to have very bad luck at fishing even though when he was younger he was a very good fisherman. Hemingway describes him by saying, à ¡Ã §Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were cheerful and undefeated.à ¡Ã ¨ Even though he is old and poor, he still considers himself to be the top dog. The Coca-Cola contour bottle is one of the brandââ¬â¢s key icons and is the symbol of the brandââ¬â¢s authenticity. It was developed in 1916 to create a distinct identity for the brand in consumersââ¬â¢ minds and to protect the brand from being imitated by competitors. Today it represents the very essence of the brandââ¬â¢s identity in the marketplace and remains instrumental in differentiating the brand from all other competing products. The familiar shape of the Coca-Cola bottle and the flowing script of its trademark are the worldââ¬â¢s most widely recognised commercial symbols. Coca-Cola is recognised by 94 percent of the earthââ¬â¢s population. The Coca-Cola trademark incorporates a number of elements which have become synonymous with the brand. These include: the Coca-Cola red and white graphics, Brand name written in the universally known Spencarian Script, the famous countour shape of the Coca-Cola bottle. Together, these elements are instrumental in differe ntiating Coca-Cola from all other competing brands. The packaging of a product serves a number of functions. At the most basic level, it contains and protects a product. However, packaging is also an important marketing tool. It is critical in describing a product, attracting consumer attention and differentiating the product from competitors. The Coca-Cola contour bottle is perhaps one of the most unique forms of product packaging. While it was originally introduced as a means of protecting the brand from imitation, it is now the most central part of the Coca-Cola brand identity. The bottle communicates the uniqueness, originality, superior refreshment and enduring values of the brand. A market research survey was carried out to examine consumersââ¬â¢ attitudes to the contour shape. In this survey, consumers described the contour bottle as communicating a variety of positive meanings. It was seen as: a symbol of the ultimate enjoyment and refreshment from Coca-Cola, possesing a sensual look and feel, a symbol of good times, universally known and universally accepted, a symbol which unites consumers around the world, an aesthetically beautiful symbol. So important is the contour shape in the marketplace, that it is now the core element of Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s consumer strategy. This has become known as the ââ¬ËContourisation Strategyââ¬â¢. The objectives of this strategy are: 1. motivate consumers to purchase the Coca-Cola brand over other soft drink brands 2. maximise consumer enjoyment of the Coca-Cola product 3. create a distinct identity for Coca-Cola in the mind of the consumer. Good design makes good business sense, because it translates customer needs into the shape and form of the product or service and so enhance profitability. Design includes formalizing three particularly important issues: the concept, package and process implied by the design. The value of packaging is often seen as a paradox. Packaging plays an essential role in meeting consumer needs and preventing waste by effectively protecting product during delivery. The company is actively working throughout the Coca-Cola system to create solutions by advancing a global sustainable packaging strategy aimed at preventing waste over the life of their packaging. The companyââ¬â¢s focus is on eliminating all raw material, energy and water losses across the entire packaging process chain-from the initial resources used to make a package through to the consumer and beyond. Today companyââ¬â¢s goals focus on four priority areas foe effectively preventing waste: optimizing packaging effeciency, increasing renewable resource use, recovering packages for reuse and increasing recycled material use. With the issues of environmental protection becoming more important, both process and product/service designers have to take account of ââ¬Ëgreenââ¬â¢ issues. The Coca-Cola company strive to be the most environmentally efficient user of high-quality, consumer-preferred packaging in the beverage industry. Their packaging innovation teams continually explore new ways to reduce the amount of material and energy used in their packaging without sacrificing quality or transferring waste. All of their major packages have seen significant material reductions since their initial introductions. In 2008, the Coca-Cola system made progress in packaging tracking and incremental and breakthrough advances in packaging efficiency. They focus the majority of their material reduction innovations on the packaging they use most-PET, glass, aluminum and fountain. Fountain beverages-one of their oldest and most efficient package delivery systems-account for 12 percent of their global unit case volum e. In 2008, they worked to further optimize the packaging efficiency of their fountain beverages by developing even higher syrup concentrations, commercializing a new cold, compostable beverage cup, and supporting commercial copmosting initiatives. Approximately 85 percent of the companyââ¬â¢s global beverage volume is delivered in recyclable bottles and cans. To realize their long-term sustainability aspirations, the recovery of these containers and their materials for reuse is critical. The companyââ¬â¢s goal is to increase this recovery to 50 percent by 2015. In order to do so, they focus primarily on advancing four core packaging recovery models:comprehensive product stewardship programs in developed markets; recycling cooperative programs in developing and emerging markets; voluntary deposits on refillable packages in least-developed markets; and Coca-Cola-operated recycling enterprises globally. A key to driving recovery is ensuring that market demand for collected materials is strong. The Coca-Cola system helps foster this demand by advancing sustainable technologies that enable greater use of recycled content material in their packaging; purchasing products made from recycled beverage packaging; and enhancing the efficiency of their refillable bottles. The Coca-Cola company has strong supply network design. The company sells the concentrates and syrups for bottled and canned beverages to authorized bottling and canning operations. There are 10 million Coca-Cola branded machines around the world, such as: coolers, vending machines, and fountains. The company calls tha machines ââ¬Ëstores within storesââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëinteraction points with customersââ¬â¢. The innovation in the equipment that company makes is: a new fountain machine that serves 100-plus different beverages; re-imagined coolers that use classic Coca-Cola design themes and 40% less energy; and fully interactive vending machines with large display screens that are both Wi-Fi and Bluethoot-enabled. The connectivity technologies will let customers download music, coupons, or other promos to their cell phones. Coca-Cola uses an innovative bottling process at its bottling plants. In order to ensure speedy bottling without compromising quality, Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s bottling process involves the following steps: 1. The water is filtered and cleaned with a special treatment system. A sanitiser and 180-degree Fahrenheit water is used to clean all of the equipment while the water is being prepared. 2. The syrup tank is prepared for mixing. 3. Empty bottles are placed onto a conveyor to be filled and stacked. 4. The bottles go trough a quality control process, and examined foe any defects. Approved bottles are moved forward to be rinsed. 5. The bottles are rinsed with de-ionized air to remove any particles. 6. The syrup and water are mixed in just the right ratios, and filtered carbon dioxide is added. The mixture is pored into the bottles according to a predetermined volume. 7. The bottles are stamped with a date and code, and then moved to a fill-level inspector and capper. At Coca-Cola, the bottling line was designed to fill 20 bottles per minute. However, bottling speeds vary significantly depending on the type of product being bottled, equipment, and type of bottles or cans. The good design of the companyââ¬â¢s work environment is extrimely important to the business success. Animal Farm. Snowball
Snowball Orwellââ¬â¢s stint in a Trotskyist battalion in the Spanish Civil Warââ¬âduring which he first began plans for a critique of totalitarian communismââ¬âinfluenced his relatively positive portrayal of Snowball. As a parallel for Leon Trotsky, Snowball emerges as a fervent ideologue who throws himself heart and soul into the attempt to spread Animalism worldwide and to improve Animal Farmââ¬â¢s infrastructure. His idealism, however, leads to his downfall. Relying only on the force of his own logic and rhetorical skill to gain his influence, he proves no match for Napoleonââ¬â¢s show of brute force.Although Orwell depicts Snowball in a relatively appealing light, he refrains from idealizing his character, making sure to endow him with certain moral flaws. For example, Snowball basically accepts the superiority of the pigs over the rest of the animals. Moreover, his fervent, single-minded enthusiasm for grand projects such as the windmill might have erupted into full-blown megalomaniac despotism had he not been chased from Animal Farm. Indeed, Orwell suggests that we cannot eliminate government corruption by electing principled individuals to roles of power; he reminds us throughout the novella that it is power itself that corrupts.Boxer The most sympathetically drawn character in the novel, Boxer epitomizes all of the best qualities of the exploited working classes: dedication, loyalty, and a huge capacity for labor. He also, however, suffers from what Orwell saw as the working classââ¬â¢s major weaknesses: a naive trust in the good intentions of the intelligentsia and an inability to recognize even the most blatant forms of political corruption. Exploited by the pigs as much or more than he had been by Mr. Jones, Boxer represents all of the invisible labor that undergirds the political drama being carried out by the elites.Boxerââ¬â¢s pitiful death at a glue factory dramatically illustrates the extent of the pigsââ¬â¢ betrayal. I t may also, however, speak to the specific significance of Boxer himself: before being carted off, he serves as the force that holds Animal Farm together. Napoleon From the very beginning of the novella, Napoleon emerges as an utterly corrupt opportunist. Though always present at the early meetings of the new state, Napoleon never makes a single contribution to the revolutionââ¬ânot to he formulation of its ideology, not to the bloody struggle that it necessitates, not to the new societyââ¬â¢s initial attempts to establish itself. He never shows interest in the strength of Animal Farm itself, only in the strength of his power over it. Thus, the only project he undertakes with enthusiasm is the training of a litter of puppies. He doesnââ¬â¢t educate them for their own good or for the good of all, however, but rather for his own good: they become his own private army or secret police, a violent means by which he imposes his will on others.Although he is most directly modeled on the Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin, Napoleon represents, in a more general sense, the political tyrants that have emerged throughout human history and with particular frequency during-the twentieth century. His namesake is not any communist leader but the early-eighteenth-century French general Napoleon, who betrayed the democratic principles on which he rode to power, arguably becoming as great a despot as the aristocrats whom he supplanted.It is a testament to Orwellââ¬â¢s acute political intelligence and to the universality of his fable that Napoleon can easily stand for any of the great dictators and political schemers in world history, even those who arose after Animal Farm was written. In the behavior of Napoleon and his henchmen, one can detect the lying and bullying tactics of totalitarian leaders such as Josip Tito, Mao Tse-tung, Pol Pot, Augusto Pinochet, and Slobodan Milosevic treated in sharply critical terms.
